4. Winding Your Rolex
Rolex watches (except Oysterquartz) are perpetual which means they are self winding. On an average, Rolex watches have a power reserve of 48 hours. If not wound after 48 hours, your Rolex will stop running and appear dead. It is not a major issue, however, because you can manually wind your watch. Simply unscrew the crown to position 2 and wind it about 30 to 40 times and once you have done this, screw the crown back down. How Do I Distinguish Between a “genuine” and “replica” Rolex?

Quality, performance, innovation and stability are the pillars that Rolex has built its brand, since the introduction of wristwatches. The company first sold pocket watches and folding watches called travel clocks when it was first formed in 1905 as Wilsdorf & Davis. Interestingly, until this time, it was only women who wore wristwatches. Later it became popular when people realized how impractical it was to have pocket watches, this was during the Boer War of South Africa (1899-1902) when they noticed the soldiers with wristwatches.

Seeing the opportunity in this new market, Hans Wilsdorf, along with his brother-in-law, William Davis formed the company and began producing high quality watches. Around three years after W & D was formed, the company's name was officially changed to Rolex, a name that was trademarked by Wilsdorf. Somewhere during that time, the benefits of having a logo and brand name to distinguish a product from its competitors was just being discovered, and Wilsdorf capitalized on this opportunity. In essence they wanted a name that was easy to pronounce by all, had no meaning as such in any European language and something that was short and easy to spell. Another example of simple brand name was George Eastman naming his camera Kodak.

Quality

It was from Herman Aegler's Rebberg firm that Rolex got their mechanics in a watch. As a teenager Wilsdorf worked at Cuno Korten with Aegler, a watch exporter in Switzerland. Quite often Wilsdorf would set up 15 watches and check them each for accuracy and it was here at Cuno Korten that Wilsdorf's obession with accuracy began. Also he would submit the most accurate ones to the Neuchatel Observatory for testing without permission. However this was overlooked since all the testing passed and he received much praise from his seniors. Much later Aegler's company came to produce exclusively for Rolex, as it does today. Aegler's descendants still run the company, although owned by Rolex.

With his new company, Wilsdorf's obsession for accuracy continued. He was awarded the world's first chronometer award for a wristwatch, after sending the first Rolex movement to the School of Horology in Bienne, Switzerland. Rolex began to gain a worldwide reputation for the finest quality watches, with this award. Rolex watches went on to win a number of awards. Rolex received numerous awards. In 1914, Rolex received the Class A Certificate of Precision award from the Kew Observatory in England, previously only given to marine chronometers. During the testing the watches were subjected to three temperatures and five positions. This entire testing lasted for 45 days. After, Wilsdorf insisted that all Rolex watches would be sold only with an Official Timing Certificate and all their watches would be subjected to a similar testing.

Performance and Innovation

Wilsdorf realized that his watches needed to be extremely durable, in addition to accurate. Under his leadership and direction, Rolex made many innovations in either creating the technology or buying patents that made wrist watches dust proof, water proof, and auto winding. Wilsdorf did not do anything in half measure and showcased its performance and advertised the new products in a dramatic manner.

After the world's first truly water-resistant watch was created, the first example of this was illustrated. Two inventors named, Paul Perregaux and Georges Peret, developed a new moisture proof winding stem and button, which they put on the watch cases and on October 30, 1925, filed a patent for the same. Prior to this, the winding stem was situated inside the watches case, and wasn't really practical to the masses as this meant that the case had to be opened everyday to wind. And so Rolex had the world's only moisture proof case, now that the winding stem was outside the watch. From this design the Oyster watch was developed. On October1, 1927, when Mercedes Gleitze swam across the English Channel, she sported a Rolex Oyster. She came forth from a swim that lasted for more than 15 hours, with her Rolex in perfect condition. Wilsdorf capitalized on this and on November 27th of the same year, in London's Daily Mail, he took out a front page ad of Gleitze's picture and her story. Thereafter, the new Oyster was placed in small aquariums, wherever Rolexes were sold, to further exhibit its water resistant capabilities, this was on Wilsdorf's instructions. In fact, Sir Edmund Hillary wore a Rolex when he climbed the Rolex, in 1953.

Stability

In spite of the company being more than 100 years old, Rolex, in order to maintain its stability as the world's best watch, did several innovative things. And so, due to this stability, in the midst of changes that wiped out a number of watch manufacturers, Rolex not only survived, but blossomed. In the 1950's, the quartz watch was invented, which created low cost time pieces. During the 1970’s about half of the watches sold worldwide were structured on this quartz technology. Hong Kong was the largest watch producer. Since its relocation in 1919, Rolex has been located in Switzerland and never used outsourcing which keeps excellent quality control.

Having made a short venture into quartz technology, Rolex stuck to its foundation and continued to market their basic craft, which was considered old in industry standards. A typical quartz watch has around 50 to100 parts compared to a typical Rolex which has around 220 parts and takes almost a year to produce. Combined with a strong brand name, true craftsmanship can still have value – Rolex was a testimony to this fact.

Rolex kept up to its name and image, and never ventured out to produce any other products, unlike many other manufacturers of luxury items, who lent their name to various high end products. While temporary profits may have been a gain for these manufacturers, their brand name often diminished. And thus, Rolex is a name synonymous to wristwatches only.

In comparison to many of today's well known watch companies which are owned by the same two or three companies, Rolex never resorted to take shelter under any corporate or conglomerate. These well-known companies took advantage of their corporate resources and were able to promote their individual product lines. In 1960, Wilsdorf left the company to look after a foundation in order to avoid their interests being mixed or combined with those of various different watch companies. Wilsdorf's original vision was that the company would never be bought or publicly traded by a larger company.

Rolex Datejust : The Datejust models were introduced with a coin edge bezel, which later were replaced by a new fluted bezel along with a larger crown. In the mid-50's, Rolex

introduced the Datejust (model 6605) with the cyclops, or the magnifying bubble that is placed over the date on the watch's crystal. In 1956, Rolex released a Datejust model called the

"Thunderbird" (model 1625). This watch featured a Turn-O-Graph gold Bezel.

Originally, Rolex offered the Datejust in 18kt yellow gold and after seeing much success, they were offered in stainless steel, white gold, or platinum. By 1962 the two-tone Datejust

models were in circulation. Also around this time, the Datejusts were offered with an option of a Jubilee bracelet, an Oyster bracelet, or a leather strap. Additionally, Rolex replaced the

original four-digit case reference number with a five digit number. Around this time, Rolex also introduced the Oyster date which is very similar to the Datejust, the only difference being

2mm smaller. By then, the Datejust offered the "midsize" which is 80% the size of the original.

Rolex Submariner: In 1953 Rolex underwent stringent experiments, testing the Submariner prototype in deep waters to a depth of 3,150 meters (10,336 ft). The watch withstood the

hardest tests, having survived sub-zero temperatures, as well as the wear and tear of expeditions. Rolex launched the Submariner (model 6204) at the Basel Fair in 1954 although it is

believed that it was actually released in late 1953 and was based on the Rolex Explorer. On the contrary, the name "Submariner" was not officially patented until around 1960. When

introduced, the Submariner was powered by the A296 movement but was then replaced with the 1030 movement and Mercedes hands, which is more elongated than the modern day

version. In 1955, model 6538 replaced 6204, and the 6205 by 6536 respectively. Model 6536 then became 6536/1, featuring a chronometer version of the 1030 movement. New

Submariner models featured a new scratch-resistant sapphire crystal and an upgraded depth rating of 1,000 feet.

Rolex Cosmograph Daytona: Rolex were forerunners in developing the Oyster and Perpetual. Thus, Rolex was not well known for pioneering chronographs. However the success of the

Cosmograph impelled Rolex to be in the position of being the ultimate "sportsman's" watch. These watches soon adopted the name "Daytona" after being sought out by some of the

biggest names in auto racing in one of the biggest racing communities of Daytona Beach, Florida. In the beginning, the Daytona's were available in two dials, either in black with silver

registers or cream white with black registers. Soon, these dials adopted the name "Paul Newman" after he was seen wearing it in the movie "Winning".

Rolex Day-Date : The Basel fair, the new Day-Date model (model 6511) had a window at the 12 position spelling out the day of the week and the numbered date was shown at the 3

position. Initially introduced as a niche model, The first model (6511) lasted just over a year before it was replaced by 6611. This model featured the new and improved caliber 1055

movement with its free sprung Micro-Stella balance and was the first to be labeled "Superlative Chronometer Officially Certified". This statement guaranteed the watch to remain within +

3.0 seconds per day. With very little design changes over the years, the first modification to the Day-Date was the addition of the "hack" feature in 1972. This allowed the second hand

to be stopped dead while the winding stem was completely pulled out, allowing the time to be synchronized with an accurate source. The Day-Date was available in 18kg gold or

platinum.

Similar to the Datejust model, the introduction of the Quick-set feature also accompanied other modifications for the Day-Date. The introduction of the sapphire crystal not only gave the

watch a much slimmer and better appearance, it also added to the durability and scratch resistance of the watch. The early Day-Date models were waterproof to165 feet (50 meters)

while the current model is safe at depths of up to 100 meters. Another improvement came in 1990 when the "Double Quick-Set" feature was introduced. Model 18238 allowed both the

date and day to be quickly set via the winding stem. Around the same time, Rolex had increasingly expanded their "Crown Collection" to feature a cast of precious stones though they

were available with diamond bezels from their inception.

But still, there is a big problem for many watch fans —the maintenance of leather band is so difficult. Well, as the following part of my last post Watch Care Procedures -Steel Band Care, today I will go on telling you some tips for how to maintain leather band to help prolong your leather bands’ service life, after all, costs hundreds of dollars, leather band never comes cheap.

1.Wow…What is this smell?

Fine making, elegant style, leather band has been always popular with lots of watch fans. As to appearance’s pretty, in addition to watch itself must looks good, matching a proper band would be adding flowers to brocade, makes you appear to be more temperamental. But nothing exists without disadvantages, the peculiar smell leather band gives out is the biggest problem for watch owners. When leather band begin giving out strange smell, use a toothbrush soak  in soapsuds, brush the dirty part quickly, then use a piece of wet cloth clean it up. In order to avoid soapsuds permeating into leather, the whole brushing process proferably kept in 20 seconds. In addition, you also can coat a little leather oil on leather band after brushing, because leather oil has protective effect on leather, can make the whole maintenance more completed.

2.Oops…Leather band is getting harder than stone.

After wore a long time, in addition to giving out peculiar smell, leather band will get another common symptoms —hardening. Often used in damp environment will accelerates leather band’s hardening rate. Sweat can also erode the leather, makes band out of shape, hardening or even broken, causing band lost or dropped accidently. So besides the daily maintenance, it’s necessary to avoid twisting leather band when it’s getting hardening, and also, change the band in proper time is essential, too. Spend little money in exchange for beautiful and pleasant appearance, and also can help you avoid those unnecessary losses, kill two birds with one stone, why not?

1. Leather band’s most attractive feature is its soft and comfortable texture, well, the problem along with it —not easy to maintain is also very serious. My suggestion is, only in winter it’s suitable to wear the leather band all day long, in summer or after exercise, people easy to sweating, in this condition, if there is no need, you’d better not to wear leather band. If you really like leather band and want to wear it anyway, do remember wear it after wipe your sweat, because only do this can extend the service life of your leather band.

2. Leather band can be made from lots of material, such as crocodile, lizard skin, ostrich, shark skin and calfskin, etc., regardless of what kind of materials it’s made from, long time wearing will makes it give out peculiar smell, keep the band in dry condition and clean it regularly is the one and only way. If leather band getting wet, you should wipe the water away and day it immediately, if gets dust or dirt on it, use a piece of cloth clean it as soon as possible(if cloth is wet, after cleaning, you should dry band also). Moreover, there is one thing more you should pay attention to, that is, after long time contact with sunshine, leather band will deteriorate, so, watch out.

3. Do not wear a leather band watch all the time, the ideal condition is getting two watches change regularly. Leather needs breath, ventilated environment can prolong its service life. Prepare more than one leather band not only can reduce the risk of man-made destroy, but also can give enough time to leather band to have rest. Furthermore, leather band watch’s wearing itself is a process of continuous pull and push, so if you do not use it every day, it will naturally accompany with you for longer time.
